David was born in Senghenydd, South Wales, but moved to Yorkshire at a very early age,where he commenced his career as a cornet player with the Askern Colliery Band, South Yorkshire. eventually joining the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band. From Carlton Main he joined Munn and Felton’s Band - later called GUS Footwear Band - in due course becoming their Principal Solo Cornet Player. During his period with them the band won four National Championships and a World Championship at the Royal Albert Hall. David has a vast experience in every aspect of brass banding, at all levels. As a Player He became Champion Soloist of Gt. Britain and also the Champion Cornet player of Gt. Britain on three occasions He was the Principal Solo Cornet player with the GUS ( Footwear) Band when they won the World Championship Contest at the Royal Albert Hall.He was also a member of Harry Mortimer’s All Star Brass and during Military service the Regimental Band of The Welsh Guards. He was the Assistant Principal Solo Cornet Player of the Virtuosi Band of Great Britain and a member of the Kings of Brass. As a Teacher He has taught brass instrumentalists from beginner to Diploma level and was the Senior Instrumental Teacher for the Cambridge Area Education Authority for many years. As a Conductor He was conductor of the Cambridge Co-operative Band where he had great success, they went from being a Second Section band to appearing in the National Championship Finals at the Royal Albert Hall and to broadcasting regularly on BBC Radio 2 and Radio 3. His Youth Bands also appeared in National Finals on 5 separate occasions. As an Adjudicator He is recognised as one of our most experienced Adjudicators and is invited to Adjudicate in every country where there are brass bands. David has appeared as an adjudicator a total of 63 times at the Championship Finals at the Royal Albert Hall,London. The British Open, the All England International Masters and the European Contest He has been invited to adjudicate the Championships in the USA, Australia Norway, Denmark, Netherlands Belgium, Switzerland France , Northern Ireland , The World Championships in Kerkrade Holland and in every Championship Regional competition In Gt. Britain David has received the highest accolades for his dedicated service to brass banding. In 1983 he received the Isle’s Medal from the Worshipful Company of Musicians London. In 1996 he received the English Master’s dedicated Service Award In 2009 he was awarded the MBE in the Queens Birthday Honours List for his services to Brass Bands In 2012 he received the Butlins Excellence Award for Loyal and Dedicated Service to the Brass Band Movement
