I started playing the cornet at the age of 13 under the tutorship of my father Edward (Ted) Rostron. I then joined the local band, Weldbank Prize Band, Chorley, Lancashire. I then had two main tutors, William Haydock and Richard Evans. At the age of 16 and after winning Numerous Slow Melody /Air Varle Contests I was invited to become a member of the world famous Wingates Temperance Band, reaching the position of Assisting Principal Cornet. In 1970 I changed instruments to Tenor Horn, filling the empty Principal Horn seat left vacant by my dear friend Gordon Higginbottom. My most precious moment with the band was winning the National Championships in London in 1971. In 1973 I moved counties from my native county Lancashire to Yorkshire taking up the position of Principal Horn with the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band, a position I held for 11 years. The band became Granada Band of the year, BBC Best of Brass, Yorkshire Area Champions and EEC European Champions. Over a playing career of some 40 years I have also played as guest Principal Horn with Balck Dyke, Brighouse & Rastrick, Faireys, Leyland, Grimethorpe, GUS, Yorkshire IMPS and the James Shepherd Versatile Brass. I took up the Baton with Askern Colliery Band and after 2 years moved to Dodworth Colliery Band. In 1988 I was offered the position of Musical Director with the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band and in its first contest under me qualified for the National Finals in London. Also Guest Conductor of the Boobs & Brass. I have Toured Most of Western Europe as a Stand up Soloist. I am a Full Member of AoBBA, ( Association of Brass Band Adjudicators),I Have Adjudicated on All Levels and I am on several Adjudicating Panels including, The North West Regional ,The Welsh, The Midlands & WEBBA, The National Finals and Butlins Mineworkers, I have Adjudicated at the Whit Friday March contests on Numerous occasions, The Brighouse March & Hymn Contest, Old Silkstone March & Hymn Contest, Wansbeck Entertainment Contest, The Fyfe Charities Contest, The North of England Solo & Quartete Contest. I am a professor/tutor to the national Youth Brass Band of Switzerland and I am in constant demand as an adjudicator and Conductor.
