Having been born into a Salvationist family, Dave was introduced to brass banding at the early age of five when he began to learn the cornet. Many years were spent in Salvation Army banding, including a period of fifteen years as principal cornet of the famous Coventry City S.A. Band and it was during this period he attained a Diploma for Trumpet performance at the London College of Music and took an active interest in conducting. Whilst in S.A. banding, Dave was invited to lead a series of S.A. music schools in Mississippi and North Carolina, conducting both brass and choral groups. It was in the late 1980's that Dave entered contest banding where he played solo cornet for the championship bands of Coventry School of Music, Heart of England, The Shirley Band and William Davis Construction Group Band. During this period (1988) Dave became the MD of 2nd Section band Rolls-Royce (Coventry) - a position he has held now for over 25 years through the various name changes of the Band. The Band progressed through the sections, winning a number of entertainment contests and area titles on the way, culminating in becoming 1st Section Champion Band of Great Britain in 1995. 1999 saw Dave lead the Band to the runner- up prize at the Grand Shield, thus qualifying for the British Open held at Symphony Hall. Dave has had a number of successes with several 1st and 2nd Section Bands in a variety of contests including winning the Midland Area 2nd Section title in 2003 with the Shirley Band. In 2002 Rolls-Royce (Coventry) Band became known as Jaguar (Coventry) Band following a new sponsorship deal. Under Dave's leadership Jaguar continued to progress with continuing success in the Senior Cup and Pontins competitions and in 2006 the Band qualified for the Albert Hall finals gaining the runner up spot in the Midland Area Contest, closely followed by second place in the US Open Championships in Chicago one week later. Dave was the first winner of the Peter Parkes Memorial Trophy awarded to the winning conductor in the Bolsover Entertainment Contest in 2011. In 2011, the band had a further name change, and is now known as the Jaguar Land Rover Band. Dave led the band to the London finals in 2012 and in October they will again take their place as Midland Area Champion Band for 2013. In recent years, Dave has been invited to conduct and train overseas Bands, notably in Germany, where he has been on the staff of the inaugural German Brass Band Camp in 2012 and continues to enjoy success with Brass Band Regensburg winning the German Championships in 2016,thus enabling the band to achieve third place in the European Championships in Ostend in 2017.. Dave`s success has continued with JLR band winning the Senior Cup in 2015 and qualifying for the British Open Championships at the Grand Shield in 2016…. In addition to his contest successes Dave continues to maintain links with several Midlands bands…….His involvement in banding in Germany also continues to expand having been invited to train four of the top bands in that country as banding grows rapidly there… Dave was awarded the Masters Dedicated Service Award in 2016 for services to the brass band movement for which he is justly proud… He also continues to maintain links with several of the Bands in and around the Midlands area. Dave has now also added a new chapter in which he has already judged a number of solo and quartet competitions and brass entertainment contests, including the prestigious Worcester Music Festival. This is something he enjoys greatly and hopes he can continue to support the Brass Band movement in the future.
