Stephen Roberts has adjudicated at the major contests in the UK, Europe, Australia and the USA. His professional experience as brass player, conductor, teacher, composer and arranger has given him a broad knowledge base and he has judged at the UK National Finals and Areas, The British Open, Brass in Concert, The Grand Shield, Butlins, The European Finals, the Swiss, Danish, Australian and USA National Finals and others. His first experience with bands was during the 1980s as director of the Jones & Crossland Band, with whom he enjoyed many contest successes. He has also been musical director of the Desford Colliery Band and guest conductor with most of the UK’s best-known bands. For twenty years Stephen was horn player with the Fine Arts Brass, giving concerts all over the world and he has played with nearly all the UK’s major orchestras as well as taking part in hundreds of commercial recording sessions. As a composer Stephen has written several successful test pieces, including three for the British Open and the 2nd section test piece for the 2015 National Finals. Stephen is currently Professor of Orchestration at the Royal Military School of Music, London and Professor of Music for the RAF Music Services.
